Many artists find the pace of coastal living conducive to developing their talents and move here for that reason. It's not unusual to meet professionals from other locations earning a living here painting, writing or making pottery. Our active community of coastal artists is involved in an eclectic array of artistic production. Arts organizations actively support artists' endeavors and welcome new members and volunteers. In this chapter we list arts organizations, arts groups in the visual arts, theater, music and dance, and galleries. If there is no address for a group, we have listed the name and phone number of a person to contact.

Arts OrganizationsArts Council of
Carteret County This nonprofit organization, partially funded by the North Carolina Arts Council, is a distributing agent that funds arts events and education, promotes arts organizations, assists artists seeking grants and sponsors workshops and lectures. Every February it sponsors the Art From The Heart exhibition, which involves artists from three surrounding counties (see our Annual Events chapter). The council also sponsors workshops and performances that are announced throughout each year. The addition of programs conducted or assisted by the Carteret Arts Council since 1976 has resulted in an ever-expanding community arts concept that embraces drama, literature, dance, music, traditional crafts and the visual arts. Its offices are home to the Stepping Stones Gallery, a display gallery staffed by volunteers. Long-range plans include an art center for the county with expanded services for the community. Volunteer assistance and membership support keep the program active and growing. Carteret County Arts and Crafts
Coalition What began in the late 1970s as a small group of professionally oriented artists seeking an outlet for their work has grown into a juried, professional art group of almost 70 members. The coalition conducts four major shows each year -- on Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend and a three-week Christmas gallery show before the Thanksgiving holidays. New members are welcome, and jurying of new work takes place twice each year. Core Sound Decoy Carver's Guild Born from an idea of seven decoy carvers at a birthday party in 1987, the Decoy Carvers Guild now has a membership of more than 300 active decoy carvers, collectors, breeders, taxidermists and waterfowl artists in more than 25 states. The Core Sound Decoy Festival (see our Annual Events chapter) in December and Core Sound Waterfowl Museum (see our Attractions chapter) in Harkers Island are outgrowths of the efforts of the Decoy Carvers Guild. The guild welcomes new members and meets each month on the third Wednesday at Harkers Island Elementary School.

DanceThe Carteret Arts Council brings professional talent in dance, drama and music each year through a variety of grants and its own budget. Visiting artists hold concerts as well as instructional programs in the public schools in conjunction with these public performances. Such concert and instructional programs have featured African, jazz and contra dancing. Private dance studios on the Crystal Coast offer classes for toddlers through adults in ballet and modern dance. Students perform recitals and often participate in area festivals, group functions and parades. Dance organizations are also active in community events. Carolina Strut Performing Arts Centre Classes for adults and children in tap, ballet, pointe, modern or jazz are offered by instructor Melanie Galizia. Dance Arts Studio Myrna Eure offers tap, ballet and jazz instruction in classes for ages 3 through adult. Gulls and Buoys Square Dance Club of Carteret
