spacer.gif (818 bytes)The Crystal Coast is a wonderful vacation spot and a great place to live, but let's face it, people don't come here for action-packed nightlife. You won't find lots of rockin' and rollin' places other beach resorts offer. However, you certainly can meet and mingle at the dance spots and watering holes we recommend here, even though many folks consider an after-dinner drink, a walk on the beach or a stroll along the boardwalk about all the nightlife they want after a full day of watersports or exploring the sites.

Local nightlife can be divided into two categories: inside or outside. Many of our nightspots offer you a choice of staying inside or enjoying a water view in an outdoor lounge. For those who prefer to be outdoors, which our area's mild climate allows most of the year, there are harbor cruises, the beach and deck bars. Besides the many waterfront bars, several local boats offer sunset trips or dinner cruises. Check our Fishing, Watersports and Beach Access chapter for more information about entertainment cruises.

Shagging to beach music is very popular here, and many clubs on the beach cater to shaggers. The shag is a type of dance that was probably a derivative of the beach bop, although it is smoother and done to rhythm and blues or North Carolina's own beach music. The dance is basically an eight-step, alternate-step that has a definite rhythm and distinct appearance. A few local beach clubs offer shagging lessons on certain week nights. If you would like to spend part of your Friday nights learning the beach shag and country line dancing, call Emerald Isle Park and Recreation, (252) 354-6350. There is a fee for these lessons; the amount depends on who is teaching. You can also choose instruction in waltz, fox trot, tango, cha-cha and rhumba.

We have listed the spots that cater primarily to nightlife seekers. Some of these nightspots close during the winter so calling ahead is a good idea in the off-season. If the business is on Bogue Banks, we have used the milepost (MP) number for easy location. Bear in mind that many restaurants are considered nightspots because they feature live entertainment or have a bar, so check our Restaurants chapter for more information too. The local newspaper or any one of the weekly vacation guides might also help you in selecting a nightspot. Our reference to "ABC permits" means that the establishment can legally sell liquor in addition to beer and wine. ABC stands for Alcohol Beverage Control, the state agency that regulates the sale of liquor in North Carolina. At the end of this chapter we have supplied information about movie theaters.
