Before we begin, a word or two about Carteret County, the geographical area that comprises the Crystal Coast. It's off the beaten track, a situation that appeals to many. By car you must travel some 100 miles from Interstate 95 before you reach the county. The nearest "big" city is Raleigh, a 3-hour car trip away, but U.S. 70, the main artery running through the county, is a direct corridor to Raleigh, so the drive isn't grueling. Although not fast-paced, Carteret is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. It contains 526 square miles and an ocean coastline of nearly 80 miles, not to mention the miles of waterfront on Bogue and Core Sounds and on the area's rivers and numerous bays, inlets and creeks. The county is centrally situated on the North Carolina coast; above us lie Pamlico Sound and the Outer Banks and below, to the south, are the southern barrier islands and Cape Fear. Picture the eastern coast of the United States: Carteret is halfway between New York and Florida. The county isn't crowded yet; the official population count for 1997 was a bit more than 59,000. However, a word to the wise: We have built two new public schools, which just opened in 1998, to accommodate our ever-growing school-age population.
