spacer.gif (818 bytes)Countless organizations on the Crystal Coast rely on volunteers of all ages to render their time, talents, experience and services. Through a variety of volunteer opportunities residents give their time and talents in gardening, narrating historical tours, directing tourists, caretaking the lighthouse keepers quarters and greeting visitors at Cape Lookout, building houses, offering tax preparation assistance, assisting hospital patients and underprivileged families. Volunteering brings satisfaction to many people's lives and gives them the chance to meet other people with common interests.

People who like history, meeting the public or showing tourists around interesting historical restorations will enjoy channeling some spare time in the direction of the aquarium, museums and historic sites. If you'd enjoy lending a hand and hammer, you will be welcomed into the fold at Habitat For Humanity or Hammocks Beach State Park, where they are always glad for another hand. All the public libraries employ volunteer help in children's programs, one-on-one assistance for patrons and outreach programs. To make a lasting contribution to the community, volunteer to help with reading or other programs in one of the schools.

Volunteers preferring the company of animals will be delighted with the opportunities at the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter or at the Humane Society's animal shelter. The Hospital Auxiliary places volunteers in every area at Carteret General Hospital. Meals on Wheels and Hospice both depend on volunteered kindness to deliver meals or offer relief to care givers. The Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis programs train volunteers who are interested in offering specific care in crisis situations. Helpline, the 24-hour crisis telephone line, is fully staffed by trained volunteers who are available to lend an ear and offer referral information. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is very active and recognized for its matchmaking of retired volunteer expertise with appropriate recipients.

If you have some time to share, volunteering will open new doors. Consider the following organizations that always welcome and train new volunteers. You can learn something new or teach others something you do well. Your call will be welcomed and your experience broadened.
